6 kW vs 10 kW vs 15 kW Solar Systems in Pakistan — How to Choose by Load

Compare 6 kW, 10 kW and 15 kW solar without guessing from house size. Size from kWh, peak load, roof, phase and sanctioned load.

Should you install 6 kW, 10 kW or 15 kW solar? Do not choose from house size or monthly bill amount alone. Choose from actual kWh consumption, daytime vs nighttime use, peak demand, sanctioned load, roof and shading, single- or three-phase supply, the exact inverter and module limits, and whether you need battery backup. Two homes with the same plot label can need different arrays.
These 6 / 10 / 15 kW labels may refer to inverter AC rating, panel-array DC rating, or be used loosely as a package name. A quotation should state the inverter AC rating and the PV-array DC rating separately.
Quick summary
- kW is power. kWh is energy (units on the bill).
- Review at least 12 months of kWh where available. A rupee bill is a poor sizing method because tariffs change.
- Array DC rating may exceed inverter AC rating where that inverter’s datasheet allows it. DC/AC ratio is model-specific; do not assume 1:1.
- Proposed distributed-generation capacity cannot exceed sanctioned load.
- An application cannot be entertained when connected DG on the relevant distribution transformer has reached 80% of rated capacity.

What do “6 kW”, “10 kW” and “15 kW” actually mean?
Ask the quotation to split:
- inverter AC rating
- PV-array DC rating
- phase
- if storage is included: backup power and battery energy
Do not treat the nickname as a complete specification.
PV DC array kW vs inverter AC kW
The inverter converts DC to AC and is limited by its rated AC power, MPPT windows, maximum PV input and input-current limits.
Solar-array DC rating may exceed inverter AC rating where the exact inverter datasheet allows it. That ratio is model-specific. Do not assume a universal 1:1 ratio, and do not exceed the named datasheet.
String design must still satisfy:
- inverter maximum PV input
- MPPT operating range
- maximum DC voltage
- temperature-adjusted string Voc
- module Imp/Isc
- inverter input-current limits
- string / MPPT topology

Why monthly bill PKR is a poor sizing method
The same rupee amount is a different number of units after a tariff change. PKR also hides whether consumption is daytime or nighttime. Do not convert a bill band into a kW size.
Use monthly kWh instead
Read units (kWh) and sanctioned load off the bill. Prefer 12 months so seasonal air-conditioning is visible. Size from energy use, peak demand, roof and electrical limits — not from plot area.
Daytime consumption vs nighttime consumption
Daytime kWh can be offset by PV while the sun is up. Nighttime kWh is served by the grid and/or storage.
A property with significant nighttime use may export daytime surplus and import later if that energy is not self-consumed or stored. The result depends on PV production, daytime consumption, battery operation and the approved billing arrangement.
Peak load vs energy consumption
Peak demand is one input to inverter and conductor sizing. Battery design must satisfy both backup power and backup energy requirements. PV-array sizing depends on energy use, usable roof, shading, and the exact inverter and module limits.
6 kW class — example, not a recommendation
Potentially relevant where annual and daytime energy use and peak loads are modest, and sanctioned load, phase and roof support it. It is not a marla size.
10 kW class — example, not a recommendation
Potentially relevant where energy consumption and daytime loads are higher. It is not a 1-kanal size. See solar system for a 1-kanal house.
15 kW class — example, not a recommendation
Potentially relevant for higher-load residential or commercial sites where sanctioned load, phase, roof and transformer/interconnection conditions permit it.
For ordinary equipment selection, match inverter phase to the site’s electrical supply/design. For grid export / Prosumer eligibility, use current NEPRA/DISCO requirements: net billing.
Panel-count arithmetic (examples only)
Number of modules ≈ target DC array watts ÷ module wattage, then check the inverter’s string rules.
ARITHMETIC EXAMPLES ONLY — 585 W module class:
- 6,000 ÷ 585 ≈ 11 modules
- 10,000 ÷ 585 ≈ 18 modules
- 15,000 ÷ 585 ≈ 26 modules
ARITHMETIC EXAMPLES ONLY — 600 W module class:
- 6,000 ÷ 600 = 10 modules
- 10,000 ÷ 600 ≈ 17 modules
- 15,000 ÷ 600 = 25 modules
These are not final designs. Actual engineering must still satisfy inverter maximum PV input, MPPT operating range, maximum DC voltage, temperature-adjusted string Voc, module Imp/Isc, inverter input-current limits, and string / MPPT topology. Solar panels.
Roof-space considerations
Usable roof is not plot area. Account for module dimensions, row/access spacing, setbacks, tanks, parapets, shade, maintenance access and orientation. There is no universal square-metre-per-kW rule.
Single-phase vs three-phase
Match inverter phase to the site’s electrical supply/design. Phase alone does not decide Prosumer eligibility.
Sanctioned-load limits
The capacity of a proposed distributed-generation facility cannot exceed the consumer’s sanctioned load. Technical feasibility remains. Licensee/DISCO approval remains.
Net billing 2026
For new arrangements under the 2026 Prosumer Regulations, imports are billed at the applicable consumer tariff and eligible exports are credited under the current net-billing rules. NEPRA may revise the export-credit rate.
The licensee shall not entertain an application if distributed-generation capacity already connected to a particular distribution transformer has reached 80% of that transformer’s rated capacity.
S.R.O. 1330(I)/2026 (6 August 2026) provides that a prosumer with a distributed-generation facility of 25 kW or below shall not be required to seek concurrence from the Authority, and the concerned licensee shall accord its approval. This does not remove sanctioned-load limits, transformer-capacity constraints, technical feasibility requirements, DISCO/licensee approval, net billing, or other interconnection requirements. This does not mean every application will be approved.

Hybrid / battery effect on sizing
PV-array sizing and battery-backup sizing are related but different.
Energy required (kWh) = backup load (kW) × backup hours. Battery design must also satisfy power/current and the actual manufacturer limits. Do not size battery kWh from solar kW or house area. Battery backup · solar batteries · hybrid solar systems.

- Converting a rupee bill into a kW size

Should I install 6, 10 or 15 kW?
Whichever split of inverter AC and array DC fits kWh, peak demand, roof, phase and sanctioned load. None is universally correct.
How many panels for 6 / 10 / 15 kW?
Array watts ÷ module watts, then the inverter’s string rules. See the arithmetic examples above.
Is 10 kW the size for a 1-kanal house?
No. Plot area does not determine capacity.
Does a system of 25 kW or below skip DISCO/licensee approval?
