There is no single solar-system size, inverter, battery or system type that suits every Pakistani home. The right design depends on electricity consumption in kWh, daytime vs nighttime usage, peak demand, sanctioned load, roof and shading, single- or three-phase supply, backup requirement, exact inverter/panel/battery compatibility, and current NEPRA/DISCO requirements. These answers are homeowner education, not a quotation or a construction drawing.

System sizing

How much solar do I need for my home?

Size from real kWh, peak demand, phase, usable roof, shading, backup need and sanctioned load — not from plot size or a rupee bill alone. Where available, reviewing roughly a year of units is useful because seasonal use changes; twelve months is not an absolute requirement. A quotation should state inverter AC rating and PV-array DC rating separately. Deeper: 6 kW vs 10 kW vs 15 kW. For Sunchaser’s final design, use a site-specific survey/assessment rather than relying only on an online calculator.

Is 6 kW, 10 kW or 15 kW right for me?

None of those labels is universally right. They may mean inverter AC rating, array DC rating, or a loose package name. Choose the class that fits consumption, peak, roof, phase and interconnection limits — as examples, not recommendations. Residential solar.

Can I size solar from my monthly electricity bill in PKR?

No. A rupee bill is a poor engineering input because tariffs change and PKR hides daytime vs night use. Use kWh (units) from the bill, plus peak demand and sanctioned load.

Is 10 kW standard for a 1-kanal house?

No. Plot area does not determine solar capacity. Two 1-kanal houses can need different arrays. 1-kanal house solar.

What is the difference between kW and kWh?

kW is instantaneous power. kWh is energy over time (bill units). Inverters and backup power are kW problems; monthly use and battery energy are kWh problems.

Does inverter kW have to equal panel-array kW?

No. State AC and DC separately. Panel DC may exceed inverter AC only when allowed by that exact inverter datasheet. String design must still meet that inverter’s PV input, MPPT, voltage, current and topology limits.

Panels and roof

How many solar panels do I need?

Conceptually, number of modules ≈ target array watts ÷ module wattage, then the inverter’s string rules. That arithmetic is not a final design. Solar panels.

Is a 585 W panel better than a 600 W panel?

Not automatically. Higher nameplate watts do not mean a better match. Compare the named datasheet — watts, Voc, Imp/Isc, dimensions — with the inverter’s windows.

How do roof space and shading affect solar sizing?

Usable roof is not plot area. Layout must fit module size, row/access spacing, setbacks, tanks, parapets, shade and orientation. Shade reduces that string or module’s contribution. There is no universal square-metre-per-kW rule.

How long do solar panels last?

Panel warranty and degradation terms are model-specific. Check the named module’s current product warranty and performance warranty; a warranty term is not the same as a guaranteed service life.

Inverters

Which solar inverter is best in Pakistan?

There is no universal “best” inverter. Selection depends on phase, loads, PV voltage/current, MPPT design, battery architecture, EPS/backup needs, firmware/BMS compatibility, environment and local service. Inverter guide · solar inverters.

What is the difference between hybrid and on-grid inverters?

A conventional on-grid/string inverter exchanges power with the grid and typically disconnects when the grid is absent because of anti-islanding. A hybrid can integrate PV, grid, battery and an EPS/backup output if that model and wiring support it. On-grid vs hybrid vs off-grid.

Will solar work during load shedding?

Only if a documented backup path exists and stays within inverter backup/EPS power, battery power/energy and the circuits actually connected. A conventional string inverter typically will not run the house in an outage.

Can I add batteries later to an on-grid inverter?

Storage retrofit may require a documented battery-ready path, an AC-coupled system, or suitable hybrid replacement/addition. It is model-specific. Do not promise retrofit compatibility from a cable type alone.

Batteries and backup

How much battery backup do I need?

Energy required (kWh) = backup load (kW) × backup hours. Final selection must also satisfy battery allowable power/current, inverter EPS/backup limit, starting power where relevant, usable energy/reserve from the exact documents, and inverter–battery compatibility. Do not size kWh from solar kW or house area. Battery backup guide.

How long will a 5 kWh or 10 kWh battery last?

There is no universal hour figure. Hours depend on the actual load, usable energy and power limits. A higher load uses stored energy faster.

Can a solar battery run an air-conditioner?

Only if inverter backup power (including starting power where relevant) and battery allowable discharge cover that air-conditioner, and stored energy covers the hours. Whether an air-conditioner is included in backup depends on the inverter, battery, backed-up circuits and system design.

What are BMS, CAN and RS485, and can I add another battery later?

A BMS manages cells, current and protection. CAN and RS485 are common communications interfaces; the plug does not prove protocol compatibility. Add modules only within that family’s expansion and commissioning rules. LV and HV are different battery-voltage architectures; the battery voltage range must match the exact inverter. On-grid, hybrid and off-grid

Should I choose on-grid or hybrid?

There is no universal winner. Choose from grid quality, backup need, batteries, export objective and site design. Hybrid solar systems.

What is an off-grid solar system?

A system engineered to operate without relying on a normal utility connection, around PV, storage, peak loads, autonomy and any supported generator. It is not complete independence or a zero bill.

Does every hybrid inverter provide whole-house backup or generator support?

No. Backup may feed a dedicated EPS/critical-load circuit or a broader arrangement depending on inverter, switchgear, battery and design. Generator integration is model-specific and must follow the manufacturer’s supported topology. Do not assume backup continues through an outage without those limits.

Net billing and NEPRA 2026

Is net metering still available in Pakistan in 2026?

The 2015 net-metering framework was replaced for new arrangements by the NEPRA (Prosumer) Regulations, 2026 (S.R.O. 251(I)/2026). Public pages that still treat 2015 net metering as current are outdated. For consumers within LESCO’s service territory, grid-connected applications follow the current LESCO process under NEPRA requirements. Full guide: net billing.

What is net billing and how are imports and exports treated?

For new arrangements under the 2026 Prosumer Regulations, imported electricity is billed at the applicable consumer tariff and eligible exported electricity is credited under the current net-billing mechanism. NEPRA may revise the export-credit rate. Do not assume every historical installation uses the same treatment.

What do sanctioned load and the 80% transformer rule mean?

Proposed distributed-generation capacity cannot exceed the consumer’s sanctioned load. An application cannot be entertained if connected distributed generation on that distribution transformer has reached 80% of the transformer’s rated capacity. Technical feasibility remains. Licensee/DISCO approval remains.

What changed for solar systems of 25 kW or below?

S.R.O. 1330(I)/2026 (6 August 2026) provides that a prosumer with a distributed-generation facility of 25 kW or below shall not be required to seek concurrence from the Authority, and the concerned licensee shall accord its approval. This does not remove sanctioned-load limits, transformer-capacity constraints, technical feasibility, DISCO/licensee approval, net billing, or other interconnection requirements. It is not automatic approval. Lahore notes.

What happens to older valid net-metering agreements?

Valid legacy arrangements may retain protected billing treatment under S.R.O. 547(I)/2026. Do not imply all older systems were converted.

Installation and maintenance

What protections, earthing and cable sizing does a solar system need?

Protection, earthing, conductor sizing, surge protection and equipment location must be designed for the site, equipment specifications and applicable electrical requirements. This FAQ does not publish a universal earth-resistance target, cable size, breaker size or SPD layout.

How often should solar panels be cleaned and what should I monitor?

Cleaning frequency depends on dust, rainfall, tilt, bird activity and site conditions. Follow the module manufacturer’s cleaning and safety instructions. Monitor inverter/app alarms, communications faults and unusual production trends. Do not treat a blog as a generation forecast.

How long does installation take?

It depends on roof, cable runs, switchgear and DISCO paperwork. No fixed number is published here.

Buying and quotation

How long is the solar warranty?

A proposal may contain separate module product, module performance, inverter, battery and workmanship terms. Duration, exclusions and regional cover come from the named manufacturer documents and the quotation — not from a generic year-count.

What should I check before accepting a solar quotation?

Exact module and inverter models; PV DC vs inverter AC; phase; string-design basis; battery model/architecture if included; backup/EPS scope; protection and mounting; monitoring; installation and regulatory/documentation scope; warranty documents; exclusions. Two quotes differ when those items differ. For Sunchaser’s final design, use a site-specific survey/assessment rather than relying only on an online calculator.
