Solar System for a 1-Kanal House in Pakistan — Size by Consumption, Not Plot

A 1-kanal house does not automatically need a 10 kW solar system. Plot-area conventions can vary by housing scheme and locality. In any case, plot area is not what determines solar-system capacity. Size the system from monthly kWh, daytime vs night load, peak kW, sanctioned load, usable roof and shade, phase, AC use, and whether you need battery backup. Two 1-kanal houses in the same city can need very different arrays. Treat any kW band below as an educational range, not an engineering design.

Quick summary

  • Read units (kWh) and sanctioned load off the bill before talking kW.
  • Daytime AC-heavy homes and night-backup homes size differently.
  • Panel count = required array watts ÷ module watts, then checked against inverter MPPT and current limits.
  • Usable roof is not the plot. It must fit module dimensions, row/access spacing, setbacks, tanks, parapets, shade, maintenance access and orientation.
  • New grid-export arrangements follow net billing (NEPRA 2026). Capacity cannot exceed sanctioned load. For 25 kW or below, the DISCO/licensee grants approval without NEPRA concurrence; other rules still apply.

First calculate consumption

Pull from the latest bills (ideally 12 months):

  • Monthly kWh (units) — energy the array and/or grid must cover
  • Daytime kWh (if known) — self-consumption vs export under net billing
  • Peak load (kW) — inverter, cable and backup-port sizing
  • Seasonal AC — AC can dominate both kWh and peak kW
  • Sanctioned load — proposed DG shall not exceed sanctioned load
  • Phase (1Φ / 3Φ) — inverter family
  • Backup requirement — battery energy and hybrid vs on-grid

Do not convert a rupee bill to kW with a fixed table. The same PKR amount is a different number of units after tariff changes.

Simple sizing examples (not a design)

  • Modest daytime use, little AC, no backup: monthly kWh, 1Φ, unshaded roof. Smaller on-grid or hybrid array; often well below a conversational “10 kW”.
  • Typical family, some AC, optional short backup: summer vs winter bills, essential-circuit list. Mid-size hybrid; inverter follows peak essential kW.
  • Heavy AC, work-from-home, long backup: peak kW, hours of backup, 1Φ vs 3Φ, transformer headroom. Larger PV + larger battery; may need 3Φ or load splitting.
  • High sanctioned load, large house: sanctioned-load cap, 3Φ, export credit vs self-use. Size to load and cap, not kanal.

If conversation still uses 6 kW / 10 kW / 15 kW, that is because those inverters are commonly sold, not because 1 kanal equals 10 kW. See 6 kW vs 10 kW vs 15 kW. Residential context: residential solar.

How many panels?

Number of modules ≈ target array watts ÷ module watts, then round to whole strings that fit the inverter.

These counts are arithmetic examples, not engineering designs:

  • ~6,000 W array: about 11 modules if quoted at 585 W; about 10 modules if quoted at 600 W
  • ~10,000 W array: about 18 modules at 585 W; about 17 modules at 600 W
  • ~12,000 W array: about 21 modules at 585 W; about 20 modules at 600 W

Actual count depends on the named module on the quotation, inverter max PV watts, Imp/Isc vs MPPT current, string voltage across the temperature range, shade and layout. Hardware: solar panels.

Roof-space requirements

There is no reliable universal square-metre-per-kW rule for every roof.

Usable roof area must include:

  • module dimensions from the datasheet of the named model
  • row / access spacing
  • setbacks
  • water tanks
  • parapets
  • shade
  • maintenance access
  • structure orientation

Module footprint is count × length × width of that named model, then increased for the items above. Only a site survey shows whether a given array fits.

Inverter selection

Plot size does not pick the inverter.

  • On-grid: bill reduction while the grid is up; usually no house power in a blackout.
  • Hybrid: PV + battery + backup loads. Match phase and battery voltage window.

A Huawei SUN2000-10KTL-M1 is a three-phase Smart Energy Controller with high-voltage LUNA batteries on the official spec sheet. It is not a default “10 kW hybrid” for a single-phase 40–60 V home. See solar inverters in Pakistan — 2026 buyer’s guide and hybrid solar systems.

Most conventional string inverters do not provide backup by themselves. Storage retrofit options — DC battery-ready, AC-coupled, or replacement with a hybrid — are model-specific.

Battery backup

Do not convert a battery nameplate into “hours” without naming the load.

Energy required (kWh) = backup load (kW) × backup hours.

Required nameplate capacity must then account for the actual battery’s permitted usable capacity/reserve and inverter losses, using the figures on those products’ official datasheets — not generic percentages.

Example of the method (numbers must come from the quoted datasheets): if essentials are 1.0 kW for 5 hours, delivered energy needed is 5 kWh. Nameplate will be higher once that battery’s usable fraction and that inverter’s conversion losses are applied.

Net billing in 2026

This is a short pointer, not the legal guide.

NEPRA’s Prosumer Regulations, 2026 ([S.R.O. 251(I)/2026](https://nepra.org.pk/Legislation/3-Reg/3.35%20NEPRA%20%20Prosumer%20Regulations%202026/NEPRA%20Prosumer%20Regulations%20(SRO%20251(I)2026)%2009-02-26.PDF)) took effect 9 February 2026. New arrangements use net billing: imports billed at the consumer tariff; exports credited at the national average energy purchase price. Proposed DG capacity shall not exceed sanctioned load. Licensees may refuse applications where DG on that transformer has reached 80% of rated capacity.

[S.R.O. 1330(I)/2026](https://nepra.org.pk/Legislation/3-Reg/3.35%20NEPRA%20%20Prosumer%20Regulations%202026/SRO%201330(I)-2026%20Dated%2006-08-2026.pdf) (6 August 2026) added that a prosumer with a distributed-generation facility of 25 kW or below shall not be required to seek concurrence from the Authority, and the concerned licensee shall accord its approval. That change does not remove sanctioned-load limits, transformer-capacity constraints, technical feasibility, DISCO/licensee approval, net billing, or other interconnection requirements.

Why sanctioned load matters

If the DISCO bill says sanctioned load is 5 kW, a 10 kW export-capable design can be ineligible until load is regularised. That constraint remains in the Prosumer Regulations. It is not removed by the August 2026 concurrence change.

Lahore considerations

  • Dust and heat reduce real output versus STC sticker watts.
  • Shade from tanks and neighbouring structures often matters more than gross roof area. Sites in DHA/Bahria appear in projects as examples, not templates.
  • LESCO interconnection, meter type and transformer loading follow DISCO process plus NEPRA.
  • Three-phase supply, where present, drives inverter family — not the kanal label.

What size solar system does a 1-kanal house need?

Whatever the load, usable roof and sanctioned load support. Not a fixed kW. Plot-area conventions can vary by scheme; plot area still does not set capacity.

How many solar panels for a 1-kanal house?

Count from target watts and the quoted module watts, then fit strings to the inverter.

Is 10 kW the standard for 1 kanal?

No.

Will solar work in load shedding?

On-grid: generally no. Hybrid with batteries: only for the backup loads the inverter and battery can actually carry.

Does sanctioned load still cap my system if it is 25 kW or below?

Yes. The August 2026 amendment changes who grants approval for ≤25 kW (the licensee, without Authority concurrence). It does not cancel the sanctioned-load rule.

Use it to prepare questions. Do not order equipment from it.
